My passion for photography is something I can’t quite explain, but I will try. Perhaps it stems from the fact that my father was a bit of a hobbyist photographer and as I’ve come to learn recently, his father too was also taken with the art of photography. As a teacher, his father would take a photo in every community he would visit in Newfoundland. On my mothers side, her grandfather too was a very avid photographer, in fact his old Kodak No. 1A Autographic sits on my shelf today (unfortunately, it is inoperable). Myself, I came to find photography via the video camera, shooting videos with friends during my teen years and even making a few fully edited and produced movies along the way. After a while I moved on from video and picked up a still camera. The first camera I ever used was my father’s Canon AE-1, a classic from 1979 which still sits on my desk to this very day, occasionally making it into the rotation when I feel like going old school. From there I jumped to a digital SLR and the rest, as they say, is history.
Oddly enough, aside from the bit about my father, when I started shooting I didn’t know any of the family history, I guess I’m carrying on the family tradition.
These days I like to consider myself not only a Photographer, but more specifically, a Newfoundland Photographer. I love to travel but there is no place I enjoy more then Newfoundland and Labrador. From our seemingly endless number of hidden sandy beaches, to the deadly coastline which claims so many lives every year, to the mountains and barrens devoid of life altogether; I love it all. With so much connectivity over the Internet, I consider all of my photos as promotion and advertising for NL in every way imaginable. Newfoundland is one of the most interesting and scenic places in the world and I try to express that in all of my photography. And if just one person steps foot in Newfoundland, just slightly influenced by my photos, then I’m satisfied.
My current set-up includes Nikon’s flagship body, the amazing Nikon D3. However, as fantastic as the Nikon D3 is, anyone who has ever dabbled in photography knows, the glass is the most important part. I realize this and only Nikon’s finest professional lenses accompany my Nikon D3, including the amazing ultra wide 14-24mm f/2.8, the impeccable 24-70 f/2.8, and the flawless 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. This weather-proof, hi-res, low light capable combination allows me to make great photos in even the harshest environments where no other camera can.
