Pie in the sky with Sean Power

Bang, bang, bang go the canons - Pow, pow, pow goes the Power

You’re probably sick of seeing Sean Power on my blog. In fact, I am too. I’ve pondered just buying www.seanpower.com and shilling for him day in/day out but I came to my senses thankfully.

Here he is, again, with a stupid big jump over a pretty steep edge. This is at Cape Spear (in case you don’t get out much) and frankly, it’s the coolest place east of St. John’s.

This place had two things going against it, the run up — which was slightly crooked and painfully short — and the landing, which was full of major water filled divots… oh, and the 14 foot drop which lingered beneath.

A man named Anthony Sweet

Canadian indie musician Anthony Sweet that is.

So this afternoon I was downtown wandering the streets looking for interesting characters to photograph when I found one.

This is Anthony Sweet, it’s his first time in Newfoundland and he’s as laid back as they come. He mentioned that he plays music and asked me to add him on facebook if the pictures came out.

On his facebook profile was a link to his music.

Wow… You need to listen… I urge you to discover Anthony Sweet.

He said he’s going to do some busking downtown and maybe try to get a gig here and return in the future.

Messages from people he's met | Nikon D3 24-70

He invites people to leave messages on his van where ever he goes. Pretty neat idea, he even had one from a police officer in Quebec.

Also featured below are Banda Brazil, H’Sao, Dominic Mancuso, Rowdy Blues, Planet Earth, Lori Cooper, Treasa Levasseur, Rich Brown’s Rincethealgorithm and probably some I’m forgetting.

Mad skaten’ day with d’by’s

A final salute to the summer that was, with the fellas that skate

So what’s Labour Day weekend without a Saturday spent watching my friends break their bodies over all kinds of fun architectural finds.

Like the last skateboarding post, this post will feature Sean Power, Khris Stamp and Neil Blackwood.

A photo journey around da’ bay

Darrell, Kristen, Becki and I make a photo excursion to Cupids, Hibb's Cove and Cape Spear

You’d think any day with weather such as it was on this very day would be a good thing.

But it was not. We essentially spent most of the day making [sometimes rude] jokes with one another and wishing it would get cloudy, just a bit, to cut down on the harsh sunlight which was ruining all of our photography fun.

In the end, it was an alright day. We had a lot of laughs and even got some decent pics in the end.

Oh and we had a deep fried Mars bar from the chippy on the side of the road in Brigus.

I highly suggest you have one.

Hope you like!

After all that fun was over, we decided the clear skies could at least allow us an opportunity to do some star trail photography so we took off for town and made our way to Cape Spear.

Flicks w/ SP and JK

Finally managed to get out with the lads on a fine St. John's evening.

If you’ve not caught on from previous posts you should know that Sean Power is a complete mentalist when it comes to skateboarding.

Buddy Wasisname &TOF At GSF

Pics from Saturday night at the George Street Festival

This will not be an entirely biased review of Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers. I did not grow up listening to every Buddy Wasisname album since Makin’ for the Harbour which came out not three years after my birth. I do not know all the words to Sarah, The Hillside in September or Shinny On The Ice, to name a few. I never go to any shows within a 200km radius. I did not meet Mr. Blackmore when I was a kid in Marble Mountain’s old chalet during one of their shows. I would not giggle like a little girl if I were to meet them again.

OK, Ok. I’ll admit it, they’re my heroes. All of them, not just Kevin a.k.a Buddy, but Rocky and Chaulky too. From the jigs-n-reels to comedic breaks, all brought together nicely with the timeless Newfoundland odes and songs… I’m a fan of it all.

And nothing says “Newfoundlandia” quite like a performance by Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers on George Street, opened by none other then Rex Goudie himself. If memory serves they opened with Make ‘n’ Break Hornpipe and the not oft performed Mr. McGuire Sit Down. Personally, I was absolutely thrilled to hear Mr. McGuire Sit Down as it’s my all-time favorite Buddy Wasisname song and haven’t seen it live in years. They played straight for almost an hour and a half, mixing upbeat jigs with songs that’ll bring a tear to the eye. As well, they did Chainsaw Earl which they wrote sometime in 1991. Almost 20 years on it still had everyone in stitches.

HOLY F#!K at The Rock House

This amazing group performs during their first visit to Newfoundland.

Most of you visiting my site probably have no idea who these guys are but I just want to assure you that they’re the very definition of amazing. They use keyboards, drums, bass and something called a film synchronizer — the thing they’d use in the olden days to sync the video and audio of a movie together as one for playback — to great some of the freshest sounds you might ever hear.

Those of you who know me well, know full well just how broad and varied my musical tastes are. I listen to everything from Johnny Cash or Pink Floyd to Radiohead and Deadmau5 on a regular basis. This band, HOLYF#!K are one which I’d heard of before and glimpsed some of their music ages ago, but never really discovered until last nights show at The Rock House. It takes an awful lot for me to immediately purchase your album from iTunes… I bought Holy F#!K’s newest, “Latin” this morning and might purchase their others before supper. I’ve listened to it completely at least 6 times already.

Most importantly, they’re Canadian which is just great. Nothing pleases me more then being able to tell all of my non-Canadian friends about a really good Canadian band they should be listening to. The second most important thing to note is that they’re actually making music. Sure it might sound like a lot of their music is digitally produced on a computer — like so much other music is these days — but it actually isn’t. They use so many different tools, such as the film sync I mentioned, which makes their music truly original and every show is example of that. Look at the passion, enjoyment and wires in some of these pics.

www.holyfuckmusic.com/ <- You need to visit there and watch the video called “Latin America”. I promise your head and/or toes will be tapping less then 1 minute in to the song.

Here’s some pics from the show last night!

Wreckhouse Blues and Jazz Fest III

Pictures from Lori Cooper Band, Matt Anderson, Dominic Mancuso and Rowdy Blues

Friday evening featured a lot of good music and I’d attempted to take in as much as possible. Hitting up Yellowbelly, Martini Bar, Dusk Ultralounge, Fat Cat and The Majestic Theater.

Despite Matt Anderson being the most popular event of the night, I was left singing a Rowdy Blues song entitled “All I want is to travel” all of Saturday afternoon as I ran errands. You can check them out here.

Also on tap for Friday night was The Lori Cooper Band. My girlfriend quite liked Lori Cooper as well and being that she’s local (Cooper) we’ll probably be making the effort to see her again from time to time. She kind of reminded me of those silly people who just love to dance, sing and carry on… always smiling while aiming to make you laugh and enjoy life.

Tidbit time: Lori played keyboard for Thomas Trio and Red Albino, who in my opinion are creators of one of the best songs in Canadian history with “142 Thru”.
