Pictures of St. John’s During Hurricane Igor

Damage on Rennies Mill Road

Damage on Rennies Mill Road

So today I got up and at around 11am decided it was time to pack up and head out for the day. Somebody has to take the pictures right?

I started off at Quidi Vidi, just to see what was up and I’ll tell you what was up: the water. It wasn’t really windy in St. John’s just yet, but it had been raining since sometime the evening before. Despite warnings from the RNC (our local police), there were a lot of sightseers every where I went. Thankfully, from what I could see, most were keeping a safe distance. From there I swung by St. Pat’s Ballpark to discover the entire outfield was now a swimming pool. Then I made my way downtown to see what people were doing to keep dry… then the wind hit.

Thanks to all the people who have commented at the bottom of this post, via twitter and also through e-mail. It’s great to know that the 10 hours or so I spent getting wet yesterday was worth it. In the end, this post was viewed over 200,000 unique hits in two days and over a million pageviews. Thanks!

Incredible shots and great work on your part to take the time and get those shots under the poor conditions. We live in Halifax and fully understand what you are now living through on the East Coast of NL after our experience with Juan. Good luck to all.

  22. These pictures really portray the damage left by Hurricane Igor. Who would have thought that a category 1 hurricane would hit Newfoundland before being down graded to a tropical storm, which is what usually happens due to the cold Atlantic waters.

Thanks for your photos. I’m in New York City and there has not been a word about Igor in Newfoundland on TV or in the New York Times. It seems that hurricanes stop at the Maine border as far as U.S. media are concerned. I have relatives in St. John’s and on the Trinity South shore, and hope they are all safe.

  61. Elm Tree says:

I agree with Ruby below stating that this is the best coverage. I am living overseas and miss our O’Canada and beautiful Newfoundland in particular every day. I searched for real photos of the city to show people here and tried to watch streaming newcasts. This is the real scene I “needed” to see presented in truly clever and classy newfoundland style. Too bad he could not cover the Burin Peninsual where my mom lives too. Thanks for the real news Colin and also thanks for mentioning about Halifax’s lost trees. Pt Pleasant and The Public Gardens were a home to me and my dog for 6 years. And Bannerman and Rennie’s Mill in particular has been my other treasured homes until I ended up overseas. Great job Colin.
And citizens make sure the city council replaces all the trees asap. The Nature in out little city is one the things that makes its so special. It ( nature and design) is already lost on the new development areas. So when I return to set my own roots down I hope to find that we have not become so foolish to think new buildings and concrete to be what makes us so modern. Esthetically pleasing buildings and lush green nature blanketing everything is the smart way for smart Newfoudlanders.

First I gotta say what a job you did on this, Colin!! Like Ruby ad a few others I couldn’t get much on the storm either. I live outside of Ottawa. There was one short clip on the news and that was from what someone posted on Youtube. A dear friend, Bev from Topsail forwarded these to me. I did get some bits and pieces from family amd friends in Mount Pearl, but nothing that could compare to this. What you posted, how you put it together and more importantly how you risked your safety to get it is just astounding. Just unbelievable coverage. I don’t know if you’re in photo journalism but you should be. A job most well done!! Congrats

  127. Dan says:

Great shots and commentaries too, Colin. The image that will stick with me the most, though, is the pile of drivers who either don’t know, or don’t care, what the rules are when traffic lights are non-operational. Honestly, most of these folks must be going around with fork hole marks in their foreheads. The rules are quite simple, and they do work, but when one a**hole decides they are not going to follow them, or they don’t know the difference, the result could be a collision, or even worse – road rage. I drove across St. John’s/Mt. Pearl twice during the storm and didn’t see one police car. Where were they? A service like that must have contingency plans for bringing in off-duty officers to help with the workload, but there was no sign of it. Only by sheer luck, most of us fared okay! My sympathies to those who didn’t.

  128. linda says:

I am very grateful to you for taking the time and interest to do such a wonderful job at your photo’s and your commentary. I know that many Newfoundlander’s who live away were worried, as I was, about this hurricane. I live in Louisiana and we have had our share of hurricanes.

  194. Bachnoel says:

Congratulations on a job well done, Colin! You’re one amazing photographer, to go out there in the midst of a hurricane and put your own life at risk to capture such vivid imagery. Your photos resurrected a lot of my more pleasant memories from several decades ago, but it is painful to see their current state. Literally, I was horrified at some of the sights you shared. As with every other transplanted Newfoundlander, I was concerned for the safety of family, friends, and fellow Newfoundlanders, and was anxious to get the real picture with accurate details of the areas affected as quickly as possible. I am appalled at the lack of coverage (< 30 secs) that the TV stations showed of this destructive hurricane in our own country – our own backyard. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of the poor soul who lost his life to "Igor." I sympathize with your loss, and know that you folks have been challenged many times before and have always arisen from the foe. You will, once again, pick up the pieces and plunge forward again with great pride. Your terrific sense of humour will never die. I hope and pray that government aid/benefit will be coming your way soon, and that your lives will be restored to normal as quickly as possible. Take care and keep smiling!

I am appalled at the lack of news coverage that my favourite TV station showed (appeared to be < 30 secs.) of this devastation in our own country – our own backyard.

  195. Thank you for your courageous coverage of this event. Many of the places shown are dear to us who now live “away” I lived on Waterfordbridge Rd not far from Bowring park, with the river running behind our apartments. Thank you, also, to Dana McCarthy for sending this to me. Great photos and commentary.

  196. BETTY says:

GREAT PICTURES. I LIVED ON RENNIES MILL ROAD AND WORKED ON WATERFORD BRIDGE ROAD YEARS AGO. NOW LIVING ON NANTUCKET ISLAND, MA BUT IGOR DID NOT DO MUCH DAMAGE HERE.

Colin this link was sent to me from an old friend from MUN who now lives in Nanaimo. I am from St. John’s and just got back a few weeks ago after visiting most of these places – I grew up on Torbay Rd. Your pictures are fabulous and the comments helpful in seeing through your eyes. I now live in NS, and this reminds me of Juan, as well. We were hit bad outside the city and lost many trees on my woodlot. Your adventures were brave I am glad to here it is over.

  198. guest says:

  199. Daphne Yeo says:

I watched the devastation on the news. Newfoundlanders need help NOW!! If ypu were a foreign country you would be all over the news all over the world!!!!

  202. Andrew_kelly123 says:

  213. Glenys says:

Hey There…Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for braving the elements on Tues Sept 21 to bring us the images of Igor’s visit. There’s no doubt we’re used to nasty weather on this island of ours but I don’t think anyone was prepared for Igor. It’s truly heartbreaking to see the damage to Bannerman Park….I remember the colored lights decorating those very trees during the Folk Festivals. They’ve weathered so many storms but unfortunately were no match for Igor. Thanks again for bringing these images to those of us who were not quite brave enough to venture out into the storm. Well Done!!! Cheers!!! :)

  214. Carol Miles says:

My husband and I were in St. Johns in June and July visiting from England. I had heard nothing on the news here about hurricane Igor or the damage it caused. I was told about it by my cousins in Nfld. I was very shocked to see the photos, we loved walking around the streets and the trees enhanced the city scape. We visited the parks with their variety of trees, staying next to Bannerman Park. I hope the trees in the Governor’s grounds were not damaged too much, because of their historic connections. Thank you for gathering the photos for so many to see.

  215. Iris Strang Martin says:

Iris from New Brunswick. Thank you so very much for the privilege of seeing such amazing photography. And your courage for being out there. Thank God you are all safe, I am and always will be a Newfoundlander, but New Brunswick has been my home since forty seven years.. My roots come from very strong people and I am so very proud of everyone that had to experience such a terrible hurricane.

  216. Mark says:

Excellent photos. And to think Igor was Cat 1….

  217. Escape3 says:

Our cousins from Portugal Cove sent the pics to us down here on Long Island, New York State. Igor looks to have been as bad as the worst hurricanes that we have ever sustained. On the 21st we were in the middle of a voyage to Bermuda which was diverted due to Igor drectly hitting Bermuda. Thanks to Collin we now know why the ship never made it there. Looking to return to NL. ED

  218. Kevin Hehir says:

  219. Tdslady47 says:

Thanks for the photos. Was sent them in an email from a fellow ex-pat. Was home in August and walked in Bannerman park. Sorry for the mess. Bless you all. Sometimes the aftermath is worse than the storm. Living in S. Texas and we get this frequently.
